CV Template to Fill In Online: No Word File Needed

The search for a CV template to fill in usually starts with a deadline: a job posting closes in two days, and the last document dates from a previous position. The obvious route is a downloaded Word file, and that is where the trouble starts. Tables shift when a line is added, the layout differs between Word versions and free office suites, the file cannot be checked on a phone, and a PDF exported from a graphics tool often has no text layer at all, so applicant tracking systems (ATS) read a blank page. A template filled in online, in the browser, removes most of those problems at the source.

Online template versus downloaded file

A downloadable file is a fixed page with placeholder text. An online template is a set of sections: personal details, personal statement, work experience, education, skills, languages, additional information. The content is entered once, section by section, and the layout is generated from it. The practical consequences:

  • The page break is visible in the preview, not discovered after export.
  • The PDF is generated from text, so every line is selectable and readable by ATS software.
  • The template can be changed at any point without retyping anything, because content and design are kept separate.
  • Editing works on a phone as well.

In eveilo, the CV template gallery contains 40 designs, all fed by the same content, and switching between them does not require rewriting a single entry.

UK conventions: what the document has to contain

A CV for the British market differs from the American resume and from most continental formats. The main points:

  • No photo, no date of birth, no marital status. UK equality legislation makes these details unnecessary. In eveilo, the photo is switched off with one click, and the personal details section holds only what is needed: name, phone number, email address, town or city, optionally a LinkedIn profile.
  • Two pages. A two-page CV is the accepted standard in the UK for most candidates. One page is enough for a first job, and three pages are the exception.
  • Personal statement. Three to four lines under the name: current role, main strengths, target position. It is the most read part of the document.
  • Reverse chronological order. Most recent job first, with dates in month and year, employer, job title and three to five bullet points of results.
  • References available on request. A single line at the end is enough; names and contact details are not listed on the CV itself.
  • Cover letter. Still expected for most applications. In eveilo, the cover letter uses the same template and typeface as the CV, so both documents arrive as one set.
  • Spelling. British spelling throughout: organised, programme, centre, licence. A document for an American employer follows the resume format instead: one page, US spelling.

Step by step: from empty template to PDF

1. Choosing the design. For the UK market, three templates in the gallery cover most situations:

  • Classic: a single column, chronology at the centre. Suited to first jobs, career changers, and applications in finance, law or the public sector.
  • Slate: two columns with a calm split and one muted accent. Skills, languages and certificates go in the narrow column, work experience in the wide one.
  • Modern: a header band with name and contact details, a clear hierarchy of headings, more room for a longer work history.

2. Filling in the sections. Personal details first, then the personal statement, then experience from the most recent role backwards. Each section is a separate form, and the order of sections can be changed afterwards.

3. Colours and typography. The accent colour, the header band and the column background (depending on the template) are adjusted separately, and the preview updates immediately. Sixteen typefaces are available; one for headings and one for body text is enough. A short demonstration of those changes is on the home page.

4. Preview. The preview shows the actual page break. If the second page contains only a heading and one line, the content needs trimming, not the font size.

5. PDF. The exported file has a text layer, and the file name should include the candidate's name, for example jane-smith-cv.pdf.

Importing an existing CV

Retyping a document that already exists is rarely worth the time. An old CV can be imported into the profile from a PDF or from a photo or scan of a printout, and the import is free. Each section is confirmed separately, so an outdated address or a role that no longer belongs on the document is corrected during the import rather than after it. That route pays off when several versions for different sectors are to be built from one source. Details are on the home page.

Common mistakes when filling in a ready-made template

  • Placeholder text left in. "Company name" in the experience section or a sample sentence in the personal statement is the first thing a recruiter notices.
  • Font size reduced to fit one page. Body text below 9.5 points is hard to read on a phone. The UK standard allows two pages.
  • Missing dates or inconsistent formats. "2021 to 2023" next to "Mar 2019 to Jan 2021" looks careless. One format throughout, month and year.
  • Mixed tenses. Present tense for the current role, past tense for previous ones, and no switching within a single entry.
  • Outdated contact details. An old phone number or a university email address that no longer works ends the application before it begins.
  • Photo left on. A template chosen for its look may include a portrait area; for a UK employer, it is switched off.
  • The same CV for every posting. The personal statement and the first three bullet points of the current role should echo the language of the job description.

Checklist before sending

  1. Personal statement of three to four lines, aimed at the specific position.
  2. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no full postal address.
  3. Reverse chronological order with month and year dates in one format.
  4. Two pages at most, body text no smaller than 10 points.
  5. No placeholder or sample text anywhere in the document.
  6. British spelling throughout, tenses consistent within each entry.
  7. "References available on request" at the end, no names listed.
  8. Text in the PDF is selectable in natural order, and the file name contains the candidate's name.
